Butler, James B. (22 JAN 1837 - 2 FEB 1905)

Died, at the home of his son, N. L. Butler, in this village (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.), on Thursday, Feb. 2, 1905, James B. Butler, aged 68 years and 12 days.

James Byron Butler was born at Grand Island, Vermont, on Jan. 22, 1837, where he resided until he reached manhood, when he removed with his father's family to Potsdam, N.Y. The family included eleven children, eight boys and three girls, two sisters and four brothers surviving him. In 1860 he was united in marriage to Miss Ellen Brundage, their married life extending over a period of thirty-four years, and after the death of his wife, which occurred at Augusta, Wis., in 1894, he removed to this village to reside. In 1863, at the time when his country was in danger, he enlisted as a private in Co. A., 14th New York Heavy Artillery, where he served with distinction until mustered out in the fall of 1865, when he removed to Wisconsin with his family, where he has since resided. Mr. Butler was taken ill the latter part of last December while on his way to Cameron to pay his daughter a visit, by suffering a light paralytic stroke, and upon recovering sufficiently, a few days later returned to his home here. Though improving some at first, his condition gradually grew worse until he was unable to take nourishment, and the end came as peacefully as though dropping into a natural sleep. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church on Saturday afternoon last, the members of the G. A. R. Post accompanying the remains to and from the church. Rev. J. B. Bachman conducted the services. On Sunday morning the remains were taken to Augusta, accompanied by N. L. butler and Walter Rubelee, for burial beside his wife, interment taking place the same day.

Besides his son, N. L. Butler, who resides here, and daughter, Mrs. Stella Houseworth of Cameron, Wis., he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Raymond of Lake Mills, Wis., and Mrs. Lucretia Merrill, of Brookfield, Minn., and four brothers, Alonzo butler of Glencoe, Wis., Jason Butler of Hector, Minn., Samuel Butler of Boston, Mass., and Briggs Butler of Nebraska.
