Flaherty, Rhoda (21 MAY 1861 – 9 MAR 1938)

After a few weeks of illness with influenza Death’s call came quietly and quickly to Mrs. Chas. Flaherty at her home near Perkinstown, Tuesday, Mar. 9, 1938, at 10 A. M.

Rhoda Welsh was born in Dodge County May 21, 1861. When about three years of age she came with her pioneer parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Welsh, to the township of Loyal and lived until womanhood on the homestead with her parents, sisters, and brothers.

She was married to Chas. Flaherty in Marshfield, Feb. 7, 1881 and again soon started her life under pioneer conditions for about a year after their marriage they began to make a farm out of forest covered acres. They lived on this farm at the northeast corner of our village for about thirty years. Here in their little log home she watched her children grow up and leave; some to homes of their own, some to work, and one, John, to die in early man-hood. In this early home she proved herself a good neighbor for her latch string was always ready to respond when help was needed in the sick room and many were the children she welcomed into the world in those early day.

After leaving the farm they lived in the village for a few years and then as if the pioneer life still called they moved in 1927 to a wild piece of land near Perkinstown. Mr. Flaherty died in 1935. Mrs. Flaherty continued to make her home there with her son Vincent until her death.

Her funeral service was held in the local Catholic church Saturday at 10:30 A. M. Rev. Aloys Zinthefer officiated. She was buried in the Catholic cemetery.

She is survived by five children; two sons, Eugene of Oregon and Vincent of Perkinstown, and three daughters, Mrs. Agnes Stoneburg of Oregon, and Mrs. Kate Beaver and Mrs. Anna Duell of Loyal. One daughter Mrs. Margaret Hastings died in 1935. Two brothers, Grant and George Welsh of Loyal and three sisters Mrs. Wm. Tomlinson of Michigan, Mrs. Wm. Catlin of Loyal, and Mrs. Wm. Vetter of Perkinstown also survive her.

Pall bearers were Mr. O. J. Smith, Mr. Dan Castner, Mr. A. P. Rossman, Mr. Albert Davel, Mr. J. M. Philpott, and Mr. F. W. Draper.
