News: Owen – Locals (17 July 1941)

Thurs., 17 July 1941 Owen Locals Detailed plans for a Congregational church building, to replace one razed this spring by fire, have been completed, the Owen Enterprise revealed last week. The structure will be 26 feet by 55 feet, and will be finished inside with two-tone insulation board. The basement will provide a fuel and boiler room, two wash rooms, a cloak room and kitchen and dining rooms. The church board hopes to have construction under way in the next week or so. The pack of Alaska, or early, peas was completed at the Owen Canning Corp plant after 10 days of continuous operation. Yields as high as 3,000 pounds to the acre were reported. One hundred and fifty people were on the payroll at the peak of the early pack. Nearly 100 friends attended the party given on the 80th birthday of James Haire recently at the home of his son, Herbert. Mellie Bjornstad suffered a severe burn on his right hand while working at the E. W. Kidd company plant last week. The burn was caused by hot oil. Galen Downing, also was injured at the plant. The little finger on his right hand was smashed. Mrs. Emil Haaya and daughter, Thelma, are making a trip through northern Wisocnsin and Minnesota. They expect to visit relatives in Duluth. Miss Florence Solbach of Waukesha, a former teacher in the Owen School system, recently was married to Harry Kasten of Ripon.
