Redmond, Alida M. (17 Aug. 1855 – 24 Oct. 1941)

Mrs. M. C. Redmond, who for 72 years has been a resident of Clark County, passed away at the Neillsville hospital at nine o’clock, on the morning of October 24, 1941, after an illness of two weeks. The cause of death was old age.

Alida M. Lyons was born in Tonawanda, Eric County, New York, August 17, 1855. She was the second child and only daughter born to John D. and Lucy A. (Partalow) Lyons. In 1869 the Lyons family moved to Clark County where they settled on a farm in Grant Township, now owed by Elroy Johnson. She attended the district school and later returned to teach there. For seven years she followed the teaching profession, teaching at Pleasant Ridge, Shortville, Parrett, (now Oriole Hill) Loyal and also near Greenwood. On September 4, 1879, she was married to Marcellous C. Redmond, a young man of the neighborhood. The ceremony took place at the home of her brother, Al Lyons, on the site of the present Clark Count y farm. The young couple at once took up housekeeping on the groom’s farm in York, now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Glen Bush. It was here that their three children were born. The two sons, died tragic deaths, the older, Lyle, dying at the age of 10 years, from injuries received after being kicked by a horse. His death occurred September 29, 1889; a baby girl was born but lived but a few moments. Harold was short accidently and killed July 24, 1911, at the age of 14.

In the fall of 1911, Mr. and Mrs. Redmond sold their farm and moved to Neillsville. About 1913 they went to the County Farm where they were superintendent and matron for five years. In 1918 they left the County Farm supervision and returned to Neillsville. Mr. Redmond passed away November 11, 1931. On October 12, 1940, Mrs. Redmond returned to the County Farm home, where she paid for her room and board, preferring that to living in a room in town. Deeply religious, she enjoyed the comforting passages in her Bible, which she read and reread. The well worn pages of the “Book,” are mute evidence of the many hours she spent in this manner. She was a good and kind neighbor, a lover of good books, and much interested in the schools of the county. She was a life long member of the Methodist church. Services were held at the Schiller Funeral home at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, October 26, 1941, Rev. Obed Asp officiating. Burial was made in the Neillsville cemetery by the side of her husband and children.

Surviving are several nieces and nephews and many friends.

Out of town relatives who came to attend the rites were: Mr. and Mrs. John Redmond, Oshkosh; Mrs. Christ Brick, Superior; and Mr. and Mrs. Guy Jones, Black River Falls.
