Obit: Laas, Nicholas (1858 – 1938)

Sat., 20 Aug. 1938 Laas, Nicholas (19 June 1858 – 10 Aug. 1938) Nicholas Laas was born at Foehren, Germany, June 19, 1858, son of Frank and Marguerita Haubrich Laas. He grew to young manhood at the place of his birth, coming to America in May, forty-two years ago, locating here. He was employed as section hand by the Omaha Railway Company soon after his arrival, and continued with the maintenance-of-way department, part of the time being foreman of the section, until retired in 1931. On November 25th, 1895, Mr. Laas was united in holy wedlock with Miss Elizabeth Koener, making their home in the house by the lake until last year, when the enfeeblements of old age necessitated their care elsewhere. He passed away at the home of Mrs. Vinton, Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 10, 1938, after being confined to his bed for many weeks, at the age of 80 years. Mr. Laas was one of a family of five children, having two sisters and two brothers. One sister, Mrs. Frank Repplinger, of this village, and the widow survive him. He was a devout member of St. Joseph’s congregation of Fairview, and funeral services were held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church Saturday morning at 9:00 o’clock. The interment was in the cemetery at the church. Relatives from away attending the burial services were Miss Anna and Clarence Grande, of Minneapolis, and Mrs. Laas’s sister, Sister Seraphine, from St. Paul. * * * Note: Nicholas Laas is buried in Fair View Catholic Cemetery, Jackson County, Wis.
