Hoeft, Gustave Sr. (29 JAN 1849 – 15 OCT 1932)

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Abbotsford Lutheran Church for Gustave Hoeft, Sr., who passed away Saturday at his home in the Town of Holton (Marathon Co., Wis.). Death was caused by heart trouble, from which Mr. Hoeft had suffered during the past year. Rev. J. Brandt officiating at the services and burial took place in the Abbotsford Cemetery with six of his grandchildren acting as pallbearers.

Gustave Fred Hoeft was born in Germany, Jan. 29, 1849, and grew to manhood there. In 1872 he came to the United States and settled at Sheboygan. On March 1, 1874, he was united in marriage to Miss Maria Volltheis of Sheboygan, and for the next several years they made their home there. In 1881 they moved to their present farm home in the Town of Holton, where they have resided the past 51 years. Eight children were born to this happy union, one of whom, a daughter, preceded her father in death. He was 83 years, 8 months and 16 days old at time of death.

Besides his wife, Mr. Hoeft leaves three daughters, Mrs. Frank Schultz, Abbotsford, Mrs. Wm. Kleiman, town of Holton and Miss Elizabeth at home, and four sons, Gust, Abbotsford, Otto, town of Holton and Frederick and Lewis at home, to mourn his loss. He also leaves eleven grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Hoeft was a genial, hard working man, who developed his farm and gave his children the advantages of his labor. He was a kind husband and father, well beloved by all who knew him. Always a staunch member of the Lutheran Church, Mr. Hoeft gained a host of friends in his community who will greatly miss his presence. The Clarion joins the many friends in offering sincerest sympathy to the mourning ones.
