Calkins, Charles C. (30 June 1869 – 9 June 1939)

All of Fairchild, and all who knew him intimately over a term of years, are mourning the death of C. C. Calkins, who passed away at his home in our neighboring village last Friday morning, after several months of acute suffering.

Mr. Calkins represented the village of Fairchild on the Eau Claire County Board, of which he was vice chairman for six years past. He was supervisor two times, serving first about twenty years ago and again since 1931 until his death, missing the spring term on account of illness. Before elected to the board he was village treasurer several terms.

He was engaged in different lines of business for the past forty-five years, at one time operating the Miller potato warehouse in this village.

Charles C. Calkins, son of Charles C. and Sarah A. Calkins, was born in Lima, N. Y., June 30, 1869. The family moved to Green Bay in 1873, and in 1877 located on a farm adjoining Fairchild, which was his home until he reached maturity. He was nearly 70 years of age at the time of his death.

Surviving are his widow, two sons, Seth, of Eau Claire, and Charles at home; and two daughters, Miss Grace and Miss Claire, both employed in Eau Claire. One brother survives, Daniel G. Calkins, whose home is in Eau Claire.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Fairchild Sunday, and were attended by many representatives of the Eau Claire County Board, members of the Masonic Fraternity, and friends. The Rev. Fred J. Jordan delivered the burial sermon, speaking form the text: “If a man die, shall he live again,” Job 14:14. At the [Village] Fairchild Cemetery, the Masonic burial service was given by C. B. Everson, pastmaster of Eau Claire lodge No. 112. A delegation from Neillsville commandery, of which Mr. Calkins was a member, formed an escort.

Friends from here attending the services were: Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Iffland, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Waters, Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Short, Mr. and Mrs. M. Kretschmer, Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Simons, John Michael, Dr. S. G. Schwarz, and E. T. Hale.
