-Reed, Ira G. (12 Dec. 1847 – 26 Feb. 1940)

The last Civil War veteran residing in this vicinity answered the final bugle notes at an early hour Monday morning. Ira G. Reed, who for the past two years made his home with a daughter, Mrs. John Stahl, in Altoona, succumbed to old age, after a short illness. He was born Dec. 12, 1847, and died Feb. 26, 1940, at the age of 92 years, 3 months and 12 days.

The remains were brought to M. Kretschmer’s undertaking parlors to await burial. Services were being held this Thursday afternoon at the Methodist Church in Fairchild, the Rev. J. T. Agema preaching the sermon. He was a member of Eagle Post, G. A. R. in Eau Claire, and the burial rites of the Grand Army will be given by the post commander, V. Regeli, assisted by members of the Sons of Union Veterans Camp. Interment will be in the [Village] Fairchild Cemetery.

Mr. Reed was a native of New York State, born in Winthrop. He came to Wisconsin in an early day and soon after his 18th birthday - Jan. 24, 1865 – enlisted as a private in Co. D., 46th Wis. Vol. Inf., serving until the close of the war, a period of about nine months, when he was mustered out.

His wife died many years ago. Surviving are one son, Eugene, living near Fairchild; two daughters, Mrs. J. H. Stahl, of Altoona, and Mrs. Mary Langworthy, of Bayfield; and one sister, Mrs. Schufer; besides a number of grandchildren and other relatives. He had resided in the town of Cleveland for many years.
