BioA: Sparkes, Mr./Mrs. Henry A. (Golden – 1934)
Surnames: Sparkes, Campbell Source: Humbird Enterprise (Humbird, Clark County, Wis.) Sat., 19 May 1934 Sparkes, Mr./Mrs. Henry A. (Golden – 14 May 1934) To the long list of those living in this community who have, or soon may, celebrated a half a century of happy wedded life, is added the names of Mr. and Mrs. Henry A. Sparkes, whose golden wedding anniversary fell on Monday, may 14th. While this notable event was not observed publicly in any way, these estimable neighbors have been receiving the hearty congratulations of their many friends. Mr. and Mrs. Sparkes were united in the holy bonds of matrimony at Augusta, on May 14, 1884, and the new home established at that time has always been in this vicinity. Mr. Sparkes is a native of Talmage, Ohio, his parents coming from England, on the borderland of Wales, and locating with an English colony at that place. The father was a stone mason and iron molder, the latter trade bringing the family to Calumet County before the railroad era. When about twenty-five years of age, Mr. Sparkes came into this section of the state seeking employment. Not long afterwards he met a young lady, Miss Lydia Campbell, the bride-to-be, and remained to become one of our worthy citizens. Mrs. Sparkes is probably the oldest residence of these parts, having lived here for sixty-seven years. She was born on a farm near the present city of Whitewater, the family moving soon afterwards to Minnesota, and were at Houston at the time of the Red Wing massacre. Relatives then induced them to go to Iowa, but in a short time on account of the father’s healthy they came into Wisconsin and settled on a homestead, adjoining the Staves farm in what is now the town of Cleveland. That was in 1867. Mrs. Sparkes was then seven years of age. Both of her parents lived to a ripe old age. While not enjoying the very best of health, Mr. and Mrs. Sparkes are enjoying many of the blessings of life and all hope that they may continue to for many years to come. They have three sons, Chairman Archie L. Sparkes, Ralph of Kansas City, and Henry, whose home is also in Missouri. |
