Merrill, Hanna E. (21 AUG 1850 – 26 OCT 1938)

Hanna Elizabeth, only child of John and Mary Salsbury, was born at South Whitley, Indiana, August 21, 1850 and passed away at the home of her daughter Mrs. Anna Greely at Beach, N. Dakota, Oct. 26, 1938 at the age of 88 years, 2 months and 5 days.

She lived in the home community until she was fifteen years of age. When her father returned from the Civil War, the family moved to Sparta, Wis., where they resided one year. Just before leaving South Whitley, she with other school children sang a hymn at the railroad station while the train that bore the body of President Lincoln was stopped in the town.

In the spring of 1866 the family moved to Loyal, Wis.

On Oct. 13, 1967 Miss Salsbury became the wife of Charles Merrill and moved with her husband to another farm near her parent’s homestead, where the family resided until 1900 when Mr. and Mrs. Merrill moved to Loyal where she made her home until seven years ago when she went to Beach to make her home with her daughter Mrs. Anna Greely.

Mrs. Merrill was the mother of four children. Mrs. Anna Greely, the eldest, is the only one to survive the mother. Three sons, Arthur, Menzo, and Lee preceded her in death. Mr. Merrill died in Loyal on April 26, 1905.

Mrs. Merrill is survived by her daughter Mrs. Greely, one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Addie Merrill of Fond du Lac, two grandchildren Mr. Roy Snow, Beach; Mrs. Guy Curl, Beach, and ten great grandchildren. A grandson, Mr. Guy Snow, Milwaukee, passed away several years ago.

Mrs. Merrill was converted when a young woman and joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Loyal where she kept her membership until she transferred her membership to the Methodist church of that city.

Funeral services were conducted in the Methodist church at Beach on Saturday after the remains, accompanied by her grandson, Mr. Roy Snow and wife and little daughter, were brought to Loyal for interment in the Loyal cemetery beside her husband and sons. Burial service was conducted by Rev. R. J. Fleming, pastor of the Methodist church, and Mrs. R. A. Prior sang the beautiful hymn “Nearer, Still Nearer”. Many old friends and neighbors of Mrs. Merrill attended this service to pay loving tribute to this true and trusted friend.

Pall bearers were J. M. Philpott, Albert Davel, Ray Prior, Ruel Stevens, Roy Hazeltine and Dan Castner.

Those from away who attended the service besides Mr. and Mrs. Snow and daughter of Beach, N. Dak., were Mrs. Addie Merrill, Fond du Lac, and niece Mrs., Henry Dehnert, Neillsville.
