Gelhaus, August J. (12 APR 1853 – 27 May 1933)

Funeral services were held Wednesday morning, May 31, for August Gellhaus, 80 year old Medford man, who passed away at five-twenty o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Medford hospital, where he had been a patient for only two days. Father Gregory Reuter said the requiem mass, and officiated at the rites at the grave in Evergreen Cemetery.

Mr. Gelhaus’ death was caused by hardening of the arteries, with which he had been afflicted for several years. His health had been very poor during the past winter months.

August Joseph Gellhaus was born April 12, 1853, AT Cumberland, Maryland. At the age of twenty-six he came to Wisconsin, and homesteaded near Dorchester (Clark Co., Wis.). Later he moved to a farm three miles south of Dorchester, in Marathon County, and remained there until twelve years ago, when he sold his property and came to Meford to live with his children.

He was married at Dorchester February 9, 1979, to Miss Mary Kleist, who preceded him in death thirty-one years ago. Four children were born to the couple: Mrs. Augusta Wodelka, Oshkosh; Arthur J., Medford Chevrolet dealer; Fred, associated with Pan-American Airway, Miami, Fla.; and Mrs. Leona Brost, Medford. All of the children except Fred were with their father when he expired.

Besides his four children Mr. Gelhaus leaves sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

The body was taken to the A.J. Gelhaus home on Wisconsin Av. Tuesday noon, and was kept there until the funeral.
