Head, Herbert Dever (2 April 1851 – 30 April 1936)

Herbert Dever Head was born April 2, 1851, to Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan C. Head, in New York State, where he lived some years. His parents then moved to Iowa, near Muscatine, where they lived for a few years. They then moved to a farm near Black River Falls.

Mr. Head was married to Alice Janet Squire on July 2, 1872. To this union six children were born, all excepting one of whom preceded him in death. Mrs. Head passed away on May 21, 1912, and Mr. Head was called to eternal rest on Thursday, April 30, 1936, at the advanced age of 85 years and 28 days.

For nearly sixty years his home was on the farm three miles east of the village, and it would be interesting to know just how many times he had made that journey on foot. In the early days he worked in the lumber camps and saw mills, and he is one of the last of that old time fraternity of woodsmen.

Great sorrow came to that pioneer home in December, 1909, when their two sons, Charles and Frank, died within four days of each other, and three years later the mother was taken.

Mr. Head continued his home on the farm, enjoying the fellowship of neighbors and friends. Several winters past he has spent with his only surviving sister, Mrs. Florence Brinkman, in Waycross, Georgia. The past winter he spent with his daughter, Mrs. Bertha Begley, in Neillsville, where he died after a short illness.

Mourning his death, beside his sister and daughter, are three grandchildren, Mrs. Fred Mohr, Neillsville, Archie Begley, Poynette; and Albert Head, Richland Center; and six great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held in the Free Methodist church Saturday afternoon, Rev. W. J. Eberly preaching the sermon. Interment was in Mentor Cemetery.
