Nickel, Leonard Edward (16 May 1885 – 6 Sept. 1974)

Unity – Services have been set for 1:30 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Unity for Leonard Edward Nickel, 89, of Unity, who died at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield at 2:30 p.m. Friday. He had been hospitalized since Aug. 24.

The Rev. James Primley, pastor, will conduct the Monday service, and burial will be made in the church cemetery.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby, where a prayer service for the family will be held at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. Nickel was born May 16, 1885, in the town of Brighton, Marathon County, and received his education there. He farmed with his parents and also did logging and lumbering.

He was married May 1, 1907, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer to the former Dora Schwantes, who survives him. The couple observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1957, their 60th anniversary in 1967, and their 65th anniversary in 1972.

They farmed in the town of Brighton until retiring and moving to Unity in 1943. Mr. Nickel worked here as a carpenter and also spent the summer of 1951 in Alaska at that trade.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Unity.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Harold (Vera) Schade, Milwaukee, and Mrs. Anthony (Bernice) Yakaites, Marshfield; five grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

A daughter and a sister preceded him in death.
