Obit: Rude, Georgie (1875 – 1882) Surnames: Rude Source: Neillsville Times (Neillsville, Clark County, Wis.) 18 April 1882 Rude, Georgie (1875 – 1882) Georgie Rude, John Rude’s oldest child met with an accident last Friday afternoon about half-past three o’clock which resulted in her death the same evening about 8 p.m. In company with Mr. Ketel’s little girls she was playing on the premises of Lambert Miller not farm from Mr. Rude’s home. Some one had set fire to a stump or brush heap and Georgie took a brand and with it was trying to set come dry leaves on fire. She set these on fire in one place and turned around and was trying to start another fire when the fire caught in her clothes as she was stooping. As soon as she found her clothes burning she ran towards home and reached a fence not far from Mr. Rude’s before assistance reached her. Meantime every garment had burned from her body and she was carried home, her skin roasted so that much of is scaled off from her arms and limbs and her hair nearly all burned off. Her eyebrows were burned and her face much disfigured. Dr. Crandall was called and did all that medical skill could do but that was of no avail. She lingered only four hours. She was conscious most of the time and talked to her mother until within a few minutes of her death. Her funeral was held Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Presbyterian Church, Rev. W. T. Hendren officiating. Georgie was a bright and handsome child. She was a favorite with her teacher at the public school as well as with the pastor and instructors at the Presbyterian Sabbath School where she had been for a long time a regular attendant. The bereaved parents have the sympathy of many friends in this severe affliction.
