Roix, Wellington (28 DEC 1866 – 11 JUL 1933)

Wellington Roix was born at Topsfield, Washington Co., Maine, Dec. 18, 1866, where he lived until he reached the age of 23 years, when he decided to come west. He came to Shell Lake, Wis. in 1899.

As the northern part of Wisconsin was then in its pioneer age, logging, lumber and tanning bark were the principle industries. Mr. Roix engaged in the occupation of hauling bark while at Shell Lake and Medford. While at Medford he hauled from Perkinstown to Medford. On March 18, 1902, he was united in marriage to Miss Effie Irish. Four children were born to this union, Herbert, Melvin, Irene and Crystal, all still living at home except Irene, who died at the age of 9 months. As the country advanced out of its pioneer age, he decided to learn the trade of blacksmithing and worked at this trade from 1900 to 1930.

In 1913 he, with his family, moved to Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) and lived there until 1922 when he moved to Withee and worked as blacksmith for the John S. Owen Lumber Co.

As his boys grew into manhood, and their ambition was farming, he bought the farm known as the “Claude Colby” farm in the town of Reseburg in April 1924 and moved there. His joy was in blacksmithing, so for six years he braved the storms of summer and the cold winds of winter to keep his position at the Owen Lumber Co., until they closed down in 1930. He still worked at his trade at home, many times helping out a neighbor by welding a piece of iron or shoeing a horse for him.

He passed from this life early Tuesday morning, July 11, 1933, at the age of 66 years, 6 months, and 17 days. Heart trouble was the cause of his death.

The funeral services were held from the Reseburg Congregational Church on Thursday afternoon, July 13, Rev. W.P. Powell of Owen officiating, interment in the Reseburg Cemetery.

Besides his three children he leaves a wife and six sisters, all who reside in Maine, to mourn his loss.
