Boardman, Earl E. (26 DEC 1909 – 3 MAR 1934)

Earl Boardman, 24, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Boardman of this village (Thorp, Clark Co., Wis.) was found dead in the woodshed in the rear of his home, by a brother, about 7:30 Saturday morning. Death was caused by a bullet from a 22 caliber rifle which had entered the brain through the forehead.

Earl who had returned from a CCC camp near Phillips the night before, and where he had been employed for several months past, arose Saturday morning after a good night’s rest and took his rifle outside with the apparent intention of target shooting.

Deceased had entered the CCC camp hospital about a week ago for treatment of a nervous disorder.

Earl Ephraim Boardman was born Dec. 26, 1909 at Thorp, Wis., and had attained the age of 24 years, 2 months and 7 days.

He graduated from Thorp High School with the class of 1928, afterwards attending the Eau Claire Normal and La Crosse State Teachers’ College. From his school and boy scout days he had always been an athlete and interested in all sports. On June 7, 1933 he entered the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Connors Lake, Wis., and had recently made application for enlistment into the U.S. Navy. He had just received an honorable discharge from the CCC Corps. As a boy and man he was quiet, honest and upright and dependable in every way and his passing is of deep sorrow to this entire community.

He leaves to mourn his untimely demise, his parents, four sisters, Ruth and Helen of Milwaukee; Cora and Daisy at home; five brothers, Lawrence, Donald, Jack, Owen Wm., and Roger and home.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Episcopal Church here at two o’clock Monday afternoon, Rev. Wendell Bennets of Knapp, Wis., who as Scoutmaster here had known the deceased during his boyhood days, conducted the services. Interment took place in the East Thorp Cemetery. The pallbearers were Gordon Wolf, Roy Ebben, Thos. Tobola, Geo. Schmidt, Henry Borysiewicz and Conrad Soli.
