Schwantes, Herman W. (28 Oct. 1879 – 2 Apr. 1961)

Colby – Herman W. Schwantes, 81, died at 1:15 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Christian officiating. Internment will be made in the North Spencer cemetery.

Mr. Schwantes was born in the town of Unity Oct. 28, 1879. He was married to the former Dora Bruesewitz Nov. 6, 1905, in the town of Brighton. She died Dec. 14, 1934. His second marriage took place Oct. 19, 1943, to Mrs. Anna Westberg. She survives him.

He had worked as a carpenter up to the time of his retirement and farmed southeast of Spencer. He was a building contractor for 10 years and from 1938 to 1943 was employed at the Badger Ordnance Plant at Baraboo and at Joliet, Ill.

He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and its Men’s Club and Lutheran Laymen’s League.

Survivors also include a son, Theodore, Dallas Texas; three daughters, Mrs. Ervin (Marilyn) Viegut, Athens, Mrs. Ervin (Lorraine) Schmidt, Stratford, and Mrs. Hilda Tews, Owen; three stepsons, Orville Westberg, Colby, Harold and Erland Westberg, Oregon; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Lester Bruesewitz, Unity; three sisters, Mrs. Amelia Bruss, Colby, Mrs. Minnie Greeler, Neillsville and Mrs. Anna Pockat, Marion; and five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
