Ebert, William Friedrich (25 Dec. 1860 – 7 Apr. 1930)

William Friedrich Ebert, one of the early pioneers of this section, died Monday evening at his home in Colby after being ill with rheumatism for eight years. Funeral services will be held at the Zion’s Lutheran church this Thursday afternoon, April 10th, at 1:30, Rev. A. Kirchhoefer officiating, and internment will be made in the Green Grove cemetery.

The deceased was born in Pomerania, Germany December 25, 1860, thus reaching the age of sixty-nine years, three months and thirteen days. He came to the United States in 1882, coming directly to Clark county and settled on a piece of land in the town of Green Grove, about seven miles west of Colby, which was still a dense forest. He chopped down the first trees on this land, and, by hard work and privations, built a splendid farm which is now owned by his son, Wm. Ebert, Jr. He was married to Lina Mueller, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joachim Mueller, at Green Grove in 1891 to which union four children were born, three of whom are still living.

His departure to the distant shore is mourned by his wife, three children – Louis Ebert of Milwaukee; Mrs. Selma Kliefoth of Manitowoc; Wm. Ebert Jr., of Green Grove – and one brother, Frank Ebert of Colby, Wis.

Those from out of town here for the funeral are Louis Ebert and family of Milwaukee, Mrs. Selma Kliefoth of Manitowoc and Wm. Ebert Jr., of Green Grove.

The deceased, like all early pioneers, was a man of excellent habits, fine moral character and a good Christian. He was invariably a good neighbor and his family circle was a happy one. Eight years ago, he became ill with rheumatism but the untiring skill and watchful care of conscientious, painstaking physicians were of no avail. It seemed as if the great destroyer had placed his signet on his brow and today another name is stricken from the ever lessening roll of early pioneers.
