Mehner, Asta (5 NOV 1860 – 4 OCT 1936)

Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon at the Salem Evangelical Church for Mrs. Asta Mehner, who passed away at her home in the village (Dorchester, Clark Co., Wis.) Sunday, Oct. 4, 1936, at 8 o’clock in the evening after along illness. Services were conducted at the home at 1:30 and at the church at 2:00 by the Rev. J.M. Le Count, and interment took place at the Memorial Cemetery with her five sons, Baldwin, Walter, Eric, Edmund and Ernest Mehner, and her son-in-law, Emmett Murphy, acting as pallbearers.

Mrs. Mehner had been in ill health for the past year and spent the past two and one-half months in bed. Death was attributed to chronic nephritis.

Mrs. Asta Mehner was born Nov. 5, 1860 in Brandenburg, Germany, the daughter of August and Marie Krueger and was nearly 76 years old at the time of her death. In 1878 she came to the United States alone to join her brother at Milwaukee, where she resided for several years.

In 1884 she was married to Edmund Mehner and, after making their home at Milwaukee for a few years, they moved to Dorchester in 1886, bring with them their first born, Baldwin, who was then six weeks of age. They purchased their home in the village and Mr. Mehner started a real estate office. He passed away in 1913.

Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Mehner, three of them, Werner, Victoria and Frederick, passing away in their younger years. Mrs. Mehner is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Asta Arneson, Minneapolis; Elsie, Mrs. Dor Hesselgrave, Cleveland, Ohio; and Erma, Mrs. Emmett Murphy of St. Paul; and five sons, Baldwin of Fond du Lac, Eric and Edmund of Minneapolis and Walter and Ernest of Dorchester.

She is also survived by five grandchildren, Loren and Dor Hesselgrave Jr. of Cleveland; Emmett Murphy Jr. of St. Paul; Robert Edmund Mehner of Minneapolis, and Rachel Jean Mehner of Dorchester.

Mrs. Mehner has lived in her Dorchester home for the past fifty years. Her two sons, Walter and Ernest, remained with her until her death and her daughter Asta also came to stay with her during her last few months of illness.

During her half-century in Dorchester, Mrs. Mehner has become an integral part of Dorchester life and it is with regret that her many friends note her passing. They join with us in offering sincerest sympathy to her family in their sorrow.
