Mead, Charles E. (1 JAN 1858? – 9 NOV 1936)

Funeral services for Charles Ernest Mead, who passed away at his home in the village (Dorchester, Clark Co., Wis.) Sunday evening at 8:45 after a short illness, were conducted Wednesday afternoon from the Evangelical Salem Church with Rev. J.M. Le Count officiating. The services at the home was held at 1:30 and the church service at 2 o’clock. Mr. Mead had been ill since October 1 with influenza and heart trouble.

Interment was made at the Memorial Cemetery with John Plier, Herman Marquardt, M.M. Leslie, William Rau Sr., George Hoffman and Andrew Sorenson acting as pallbearers. Music at the church was furnished by Carol Ockerlander, Phyllis Schief, Ethel Krause and Hazel Pickett who sang “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Rock of Ages.”

Charles Ernest Mead was born in Newark, Rock Co., Wis., on Jan. 1, 1851 (must be 1858 to be 78) and was 78 years old at the time of death. He grew to young manhood there and in Aug. of 1878 he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Oakes. After living several years near Newark they moved to Beloit where Mrs. Mead died in 1904. On Sept. 20, 1906, Mr. Mead was married to Miss June Turner at Rockford, Ill., and after residing at Beloit until 1916 they moved to a farm in La Crosse Co. where they lived until 1919, when they moved to their farm 1 ¼ miles north of Dorchester. Here they lived until the spring of 1927 when they moved to the village where they have since lived. Mr. Mead’s life was spent at farming and carpentering until about 12 years ago when he retired from active work.

Always jolly and good natured, Mr. Mead had a kind word for everyone and his sudden passing was a great shock to his many friends, who join with us in offering deepest sympathy to his family.

He is mourned by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Robert Fleck, nee Alice of Portland, Ore., and Mrs. Howard Bilbrough, nee Bessie, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and two grandsons, E.W. Mead of Chicago and Edward Dorsch of Los Angeles. He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Sam Jones of Galesville and three brothers, William of Los Angeles, Richard and Fred of Dorchester, and a great-grandson, Charles Mead of Chicago.
