Cook, Lida (28 July 1878 – 21 Apr. 1932)

Mrs. George S. Cook, one of the most prominent women in Unity and wife of the Unity supervisor, died at the St. Joseph’s hospital at Marshfield Thursday morning, April 21, after an illness of one week, peritonitis being the cause of her departure to the distant shore. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 at the residence and at 2:00 o’clock in the Methodist church, Rev. F. M. Blish officiating, and internment was made in the Unity cemetery.

The Rev. Olson, pastor of the Trinity Lutheran church, read the scripture selection and offered prayer, and the Rev. Blish, pastor of the Methodist Episcopal church, delivered the funeral sermon.

Three hymns, “Count Your Blessings,” “Saved By Grace,” and “I Will Meet You in the Morning,” were sung by Mrs. Alma Scott, Mrs. Ed. Peterson, Ernest Messer, and L. L. Quniby, with Mrs. Tom Loughead at the piano.

Burial was made in the Unity cemetery. Pallbearers were F. J. Bloczynski, E. J. Feit, A. M. Salter, M. J. Fuller, A. E. Messer, and M. E. Evenson. Members of the Lady Grey Rebekah lodge placed evergreen sprigs in the open grave.

Flower girls included the following: Misses Lorna Mabbott, Myrtle Holmes, Margaret Wilson, Lloyd Ravey, Ina Wilson, Nina Fuller, Esther Spencer, Thelma Wilson, Marie Binning, Alice Holmes, Lyla Fae Ravey, and Edna Bennett.

The deceased, whose maiden name was Lida Gillett, was born in Fond du Lac July 28, 1878, and moved to Unity with her mother and brother, Fay Gillett, in 1898. Her brother is now president of the village. She was married April 1, 1900, at Unity and lived in that village ever since. She is survived by her husband, one brother and seven children, namely: Mrs. Mabbott, town of Unity; Mrs. Raymond Fleming, Ashland; Mrs. Lee Holmes, Abbotsford; Sewell, Faetta, Calvin and Shirley Cook, Unity. Also eight grand children.

The sad news of her death left sorrow wherever it touched and the expressions of sympathy for the bereaved ones were many and from the heart for the deceased was one of the most prominent women of Unity – one whose every day life embellished by the most charming and lovable attributes of her sex, a perfect lady at all times.

When word of her death was sent to the county board, then in session at Wausau, the supervisors sent a delegation to Unity to pay their respects to the deceased and a floral token and adopted the following resolution:

“Whereas, the members of this board were shocked at the news of the death of Mrs. George S. Cook, wife of our fellow member, be it “Resolved by the Marathon county board of supervisors that we express our sincere sympathy to Mr. Cook and the members of his family.”
