LaFee, Phoebe Elizabeth (17 Sept. 1854 – 27 Aug. 1933)

Mrs. Phoebe Elizabeth LaFee, a former Colbyite, passed on to the distant shore at the home of her son in Minneapolis Sunday, August 27th, uremia being the cause of her death. About a year and a half ago, she suffered a paralytic stroke and had been ailing ever since. The remains were brought to Colby and funeral services were held at the Colby M. E. church Wednesday afternoon, Rev. S. E. Bushendorf officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. The pall bearers were Henry Aderhold, Lenord Krucker, Alphonse Bauers, Howard Harris, Robert Brotherton and Carl Reyer. The flower girls were Auralie Gaskill, Gertrude Steinke, Lydia Burhop, Alvina Burhop, Mrs. Ed. Kraus. The choir, consisting of C. A. Nelsen, Miss Madeline Reyer, and Miss Hattie Fehlman, sang “Jesus Lover of My Soul” and “Safe in The Arms of Jesus”. C. A. Nelsen sang a solo, “In the Sweet By and By”. Mrs. Hanson acted as organist.

Mrs. LaFee was born in Yarmouth, England, September 17, 1854, thus reaching the age of seventy-eight years, eleven months and ten days. She came to America with her parents in 1858 and settled at Mill Creek, Wisconsin, remaining there until her marriage to Henry Greenwood December 3, 1870. To this union, nine children were born: Albert, Paul, Oscar, Rosaline, Walter, Auralie, Jennie, Gladys and Anthony. Three children, Albert, Paul and Oscar, besides her husband, have preceded her to the great beyond. On November 8, 1905, she was joined in marriage to Warren LaFee. Mr. LaFee passed away March 31, 1913. Mrs. LaFee leaves to mourn her six children: Mrs. Fred Burhop, Colby, Wis.; R. W. Greenwood, of Big Rapids, Michigan; Mrs. Mose Horton of Duluth, Minnesota; Mrs. Will Steinke of Arnott, Wisconsin; Mrs. Aura Gaskill and J. Anthony Greenwood of Minneapolis. Also twenty-eight grand children and eight great grand children. She and her husband moved to Colby, Wisconsin, in 1872, when they settled on a farm in the town of Hull, and made this their home up to the time of her death except for a short time spent with her son, J. Anthony, at Minneapolis.

Mrs. LaFee witnessed the growth of this community from the ox team to the airplane; from paths through the wilderness to the paved highways. She was a kind, loving mother, a good wife and a true neighbor and never forgot the hospitable ways of the early pioneer.
