Surnames: MEAD BOWEN KETTNER WINGER WELTON TIEDEMANN ---Source: THORP COURIER (Thorp, Clark County, Wis.) 05/27/1937 Mead, Hixon M. #3 (4 MAR 1874 – 24 MAY 1937) Hixon Moses Mead died Monday, May 24th, 1937, at 6:15 a.m. at his home in Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.), from an attack of Acute Myocarditis. Mr. Mead was born in Longwood, Wis., March 4th, 1874. He attended school at Longwood and Neillsville and taught country school for eight years. In 1898 he joined the Marshfield Band Regiment and served in the Spanish-American War. On June 26th, 1901, Mr. Mead married Edna Bowne. To this union six children were born. They moved to Thorp on Dec. 4th, 1909, where Mr. Mead accepted a position as a post office clerk. In 1911 he was appointed as rural mail carried on Route No. 3 out of Thorp. This position he held until 1919. He taught music and band for several years, and was an active member of the I.O.O.F. Forest Queen Lodge No. 321, Thorp. Surviving him are his wife and six children, Russell of Greenwood, Mary (Mrs. Steve Kettner) Rhinelander, Wis., Donald of Rerie, Idaho, Maurice of Thorp, Virginia (Mrs. Eldred Winger) of Lublin, June (Mrs. Phillip Welton), Duluth, Minn., and fifteen grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Herman Tiedemann of Thorp, and two brothers, Fred of Sturgeon Valley, Saskatchewan, Canada, and Byron of Wenatchee, Wash. The funeral was conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at the Bogumill Funeral Home by the Odd Fellow Lodge. Military honors were accorded by the local American Legion Post, whose members, with firing squad, escorted the body to the grave where the salute was given and taps sounded. |
