Gibbs, Reid L. (8 JUL 1905 – 20 JUL 1968)

Reid L. Gibbs, age 63, of Rt. 6, Chippewa Falls, died Saturday evening (20 Jul 1968) at his home. Mr. Gibbs was born July 8, 1905 at Plainfield, Wis., son of Francis Henry and Minnie R. Fox Gibbs. He moved with his parents to Clark County, Wis. in 1906. His marriage to Lila E. Brown took place on June 1 1927, after which the couple operated the family farm in the Town of Worden, until 1954. During this time, Mr. Gibbs was active in community affairs, serving as town clerk and as a member of the school board. He also was one of the original founders, director, and president of the board of the Farmers Oil Co-operative of Thorp. In 1954 the family moved to Chippewa Falls, where Mr. Gibbs was employed as a carpenter for a short time, prior to forming his own contracting business with his son, Howard. The business is known as the Gibbs Construction Co.

Since coming to the Chippewa Falls area, Mr. Gibbs has been a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, and served the congregation as a Lay Leader, for the past several years, as well as serving on the board of trustees.

Survivors include his wife, Lila, three sons, Leonard (Lloyd) of Thorp; Howard of Chippewa Falls; La Vern of Sturtevant, Wis. One daughter, Mrs. Taylor (Jeanette) Murphy of Cuba, Illinois. Also fourteen grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Carl Brandt of Stanley; Mrs. Martin Haas of Mesa, Arizona, and a brother Roy of Stanley. He was preceded in death by his parents and two daughters, Betty and June.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Trinity Methodist Church, with Rev. John F. Wreford officiating. Interment will be in the family lot in Oakland Cemetery, Stanley, Wis.

Friends may call at the Hogseth-Pederson Funeral Chapel from Tuesday at 2 p.m. until Wednesday at 11 a.m. The body will then be taken to the church to lie in state until time of the service.
