Podevels, Ernest (31 Dec. 1863 – 9 Aug. 1936)

Ernest Podevels died of pneumonia and complications at his home in the city of Colby at 5:00 p.m. Sunday at the age of seventy-two years. He had been ill since July 1st. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at Zion Lutheran church, Rev. O. Hoffmann officiating, and burial was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were Emil Kading, Walter Wiersig, Julius Kobs, Gust Franz, August Stock and Robert Schorer. Those in charge of the flowers were Alice Wink, Shirley Wink, Dolores Schultz, Dorine Kading, Dorothy Roeglin, Melvin, Harold, Elroy and Arvin Podevels.

The deceased was born in Sassonburg, Germany, on December 31st, 1863. and came to the United States in 1883, locating in Chicago where he was married to Miss Lena Fuhrmann on October 9, 1886. They resided in Chicago for three years and then moved to Denver, Colorado, where they made their home for two years. In 1891, they came to the town of Hull and settled on a wild piece of land consisting of forty acres which they purchased. After this was cleared, about ten years later, they purchased sixty-six acres more, about two of which were cleared. Two years after that eighty additional acres were purchased. A son, Eugene, purchased the first 106 acres and another son, Herman, purchased the last eighty. Fifteen years ago they moved to the city of Colby.

Surviving are his widow, five daughters, Mrs. Alfred Roeglin of West Allis, Mrs. Herbert Wink of Milwaukee, Mrs. Gottlieb Schultz of Spencer, Mrs. Ernest Kading of Sheboygan and Evelyn, at home, four sons, Herman, Edward, Albert and Eugene, all of Colby, and two brothers in Germany. There are twenty-eight grand children.

The deceased had experienced all the hardships of the early settlers which he and his wife carried bravely and, later, enjoyed prosperity quietly. He was a man of excellent habits, fine moral character and a good Christian. He had filled the various relations of life as son, husband, father, brother, friend, and filled them well.

Out of town people here for the funeral were Mrs. Alfred Roeglin and son, and two daughters of West Allis, Mrs. Herbert Wink and two sons and two daughters of Milwaukee and Mrs. Ernestine Kading and two daughters of Sheboygan.
