Surnames: Haavisto, Saarnoja Source: OWEN ENTERPRISE (Owen, Clark County, Wis.) 09/02/1937 Haavisto, John (24 JUN 1866 – 8 SEP 1937) Word was received here (Owen, Clark Co., Wis.) today of the death of John Haavisto of the town of Longwood (Clark Co.). He passed away Wednesday in the General Hospital at Madison of complications following an operation, and pneumonia, at the age of 71 years and 3 months. He will be buried from the Griebenow-Weirich Funeral Parlors Saturday, with Dr. Tamminen of Minneapolis, pastor of the Finnish Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment will be made in the Riverside Cemetery. (Follow on in 9/23/1937 Owen Enterprise) Funeral services were conducted Saturday, Sept. 11, from the Finnish Lutheran Church, Owen, for John Haavisto, 71, with Rev. Tamminen of St. Paul officiating. Burial was made in Riverside Cemetery. Mr. Haavisto died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1938, at the General Hospital in Madison, where he had undergone an operation for gall stones, after the operation pneumonia set in and was fatal to him. John Haavisto was born June 24, 1866, at Nivola, Finland. He attended compulsory religious school there, and in 1887 came to America. He settled in northern Minnesota, where he was employed as a lumber jack, miner, carpenter, and jeweler. On Sept. 2, 1906, he was united in marriage to Miss Hilja Saarnoja. To this union were born ten children: five sons, John, Eino, Adolph, Albert and William; and five daughters, Laina, Alma, Helen, Laura and Martha, who died in infancy. In 1912 Mr. and Mrs. Haavisto and family moved from Ely, Minn., to Owen, where they settled on a farm and have since resided there. Pallbearers for the funeral services were Isaac Walkoma, Matt Arola, Charles Riipi, Matt Salo, Abraham Mattson, and Emil Haya. |
