Donald W. Drews, 83, rural Marshfield, passed away peacefully with his wife at his side on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007, in the Palliative Care Unit, Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield. Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 17, at Faith Lutheran Church, Marshfield. The Rev. Lowell Bolstad officiated. Maldon Plank was the organist for Duane Helgerson. Burial was in West Spencer Cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews, Keith Trowbridge, Lance David, Brian Heggelund, Troy David, Alan David, and Craig David.

Donald W. Drews was born on Dec. 3. 1923, to Harold and Elsie (nee Crossgrove) Drews. He was a graduate and valedictorian of the Spencer High School class of 1941. He attended NYA School in Wausau and Manitowoc to become a machinist. He was employed at the Manitowoc shipyards building submarines during World War ll. He returned to the family farm after his father was seriously injured, and this became his lifelong work. He married Silveria “Susie” David on Feb. 14, 1948. He was a past supervisor in the town of Spencer, and of the FFA Spencer Activity Board. He was recognized as an Outstanding Retired Farmer in 1990, and served for 25 years on the Agricultural Soil Conservation Committee, in Wausau. For more than 30 years, he was an active member on the executive board for the town of Spencer’s Fire Department. Although retired he enjoyed helping his son on the family farm. He loved the land and watching things grow. He always demonstrated a great interest in family, he liked to bowl, watch sports, and would make time for a game of sheepshead and his grandchildren’s activities.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Suzie Drews, Marshfield; his children, Charles (Charmaine) Drews, Marshfield, Sharon (Jerry) Kobs, Spencer, and Diane (Mark) Dillman, Wausau; five grandchildren, Claire and Chloe Drews, Robin Kobs, Dana (Steve) Schubring, and Amber Duranceau; three great-granddaughters, Alanna, Makenna, and Ava Schubring; one brother-in-law, Ken Kraemer; Forest Park, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his sisters, Elaine Kraemer and Ruby Nelson; and one brother-in-law, John “Jack” Nelson.

Maurina/Community Funeral Home, Spencer, assisted the family with arrangements.
