Funeral services will be held at the St. Mary’s Catholic church Saturday morning at 9:30, a father of the Marathon City monastery officiating as Rev. Lang is on his vacation. Source: Colby Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) 08/03/1939 Funeral services for John Schommer, who died at the age of fifty-two years at the Marshfield hospital Wednesday night, July 26th, after an illness of five years with bright’s disease, were held at St. Mary’s Catholic church Saturday morning and internment was made in the parish cemetery, a Father of the Marathon monastery officiating. Pall bearers were Joe Kraus, Ed. Schultz, John Schlimm, Frank Sterzinger, Abe Butler, and Peter Apfelbeck. Those in charge of the flowers were Rosemund VanRooy, Doris Johnson, May Olson and Harriet Van Rody. The deceased is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Schommer, Sr., and was born in Houghton, Mich., May 19th, 1887, thus reaching the age of 52 years, two months and seven days. The Schommer family lived in Hancock, Mich., and Outagamie county, Wisconsin, before coming to Colby thirty-two years ago to engage in farming. The deceased was married to Margaret Jordan at Colby in St. Mary’s Catholic church on May 19th, 1914. After their marriage, they engaged in farming. Surviving are his wife and nine children – Joseph Schommer of Winona, Minn., Leo Schommer of the U.S. Marines stationed at Shanghai, China, Wendalin Schommer of Colby, Bernaditt Schommer of Milwaukee, Mrs. Kenneth Boyd of Reedsburg, Wis., Germaine Schommer of Baraboo, Wis., Margaret, John and Mary Schommer of Colby. Four brothers and four sisters also survive – Bernard Schommer of Colby, Mrs. Peter Van Rooy of Colby, Mrs. Albert DeBruine of Kaukauna, Wis., Lambert Schommer of Marshfield, Kaspeh Schommer of Ventura, Calif., Mrs. Carl Johnson of Abbotsford, Mrs. Inor Olson of Dorchester, Raymond Schommer of Kaukauna, Wis. Out of town relatives here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Albert DeBruine, Mr. and Mrs. Alvin DeBruine and Raymond Schommer of Kaukauna, Mr. and Mrs. John Schommer, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schommer and Mrs. Leo Schommer of Freedom, Wis., Mrs. Henry Arndt and children and Bernaditt Schommer of Milwaukee, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schommer and Norbert Schommer of Winona, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Boyd of Reedsburg, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Linn and children of Astics, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Lube, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Thomson and Mr. and Mrs. Lambert Schommer of Marshfield, Wis., Mr. and Mrs. William Jensen of Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jordan and daughter, Genevieve, of Unity, Mr. and Mrs. Matt Jordan and children of Ontanogan, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson and children of Abbotsford, Germaine Schommer of Baraboo and Mr. and Mrs. Inor Olson of Dorchester. Out of town guests were Mrs. Peter Schumacher and son, Melvin, and daughter, Agnes, and Mrs. Frank Weber of Dorchester. Dinner was served 68 people at the home. |
