Gierl, Robert (8 Aug. 1879 – 14 Nov. 1941)

Robert Gierl, a prominent farmer and buyer of fox horses of the town of Holton, Marathon county, died as the result of a heart attack Friday morning, Nov. 14th. At 9:00 A.M., at his home. Funeral services were held at St. Bernard’s Catholic church in Abbotsford Monday morning, the Rev. C. D. Brady officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were John Kiefer, Wm. Brunner, Gust Hintz, Wm. Hintz, Wm. Bell and Joseph Kunze. Honorary pall bearers were C. J. Bane, Howard Bane, Harold Christensen, Walter Grambort, Hubert Grambort and Gilbert Grambort. Those in charge of the flowers were Rose Marie Gierl, Jane Lukowicz, Ermine Orth, Frances Kunze, Evelyn Harrop, Ruth Wibben and Dorothy Wibben.

The deceased was born in the town of Hull on the present Gierl Bros. farm on August 8th, 1879, thus reaching the age of 62 years, three months and six days. He moved onto his farm in the town of Holton 23 years ago. He also spent seven years in Washington. He was married to Laura Schneider in Colby on January 16th, 1912, to which union two children were born.

Mr. Gierl is survived by his wife, two children, Morris Gierl and Helen Gierl of Abbotsford, two grand children, Bobby, age three years, and Donald Gierl, age nine weeks, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Kathryn Seabury of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. John Dietrich of Milwaukee, Mrs. Ida Lukowicz, Mrs. Hugo Dhein, Louis Gierl, Ernest Gierl, Killian Gierl, George Gierl, all of Colby, and Albert Gierl and Joseph Gierl of Athens. Two brothers, John Gierl and Frank Gierl preceded him in death.

Out of town relatives here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gierl, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gierl and Mrs. Floyd Gierl, all of Athens, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Heppner, Mr. and Mrs. John Schneider, and Mr. and Mrs. Byron Olson, all of Colby. Out of town friends at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Haebig of Marshfield, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lehman, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lehman, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Berghammer, Mr. and Mrs. John Berghammer, and Mrs. Anna Schmitt, all of Athens, and Albert Miller of Milan.

Mr. Gierl was a faithful church member, an industrious worker, a kind husband and father and will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him. His departure is even more keenly felt because of his sudden death, being ill but two hours. He was conscious until the time of his death.
