Madsen, Johanna (29 DEC 1874 – 28 FEB 1940)

A sudden sorrow and sadness has stricken the hearts of the family and relatives, as well as a wide host of dear friends of Mr. H.C. Madsen, who passed away at the hospital at Marshfield early Wednesday morning following a brief illness.

Mrs. Madsen was apparently in excellent health until last Friday morning, when in the barn with her husband, suddenly complained of being dreadfully ill and thought she had better go to the house. Her husband, Hans, helped her to the house and when midway she collapsed. She was immediately given medical attention but her condition continued to grow worse. Sunday evening she was taken to the hospital where she passed away early Wednesday morning. During the time she was at the hospital she was in a state of unconsciousness most of the time.

Johanna Hansen was born on Dec. 29, 1874, in Denmark, where she lived her early girlhood days, later moving to America with her mother, brother and sister, having lived in this country for the past 46 years. On June 14, 1897, at Racine, she was united in marriage to Hans C. Madsen. Four years after their marriage they moved to Owen (Clark Co., Wis.), where she has enjoyed a pleasant and happy life for the past 39 years, every one of which was an accumulative one for her as her joys and friendships increased. She was the mother of three children, one daughter, Mrs. Ed Muranko (Mary) of Owen, and two sons, Ernest of Medford and Peter of Owen.

All of her life she has been a true believer of the Christian faith and belonged to the Danish sisterhood and was a member of the Danish Lutheran Church. She leaves to mourn her passing, besides her family, one sister, Anna Larsen of Denmark, and one brother, J.P. Hansen of Owen. Tow other brothers have preceded her in death. Nels died years ago and three months ago she attended the funeral services of her brother, Hans.

Funeral services will be conducted from the home at 1:30 Saturday afternoon and from the Danish Church at Withee at two o’clock with Rev. Jens A. Holst officiating. Interment will be made in the Danish Cemetery.

The body will be lying instate at the Griebenow-Weirich Funeral Parlors for the benefit of her many friends who wish to pay her their final tribute and will not be opened at the church.
