MacMillan, Mary Elizabeth (4 Nov. 1849 – 1943)

Mrs. J. D. MacMillan passed away at the Marshfield Hospital early Wednesday morning, March 10, after a brief illness, resulting from a fall in which she suffered hip and wrist fractures. She was 93 years of age.

The departed was born Nov. 4, 1849, to Donald and Grace MacIntyre, at Newington, Ontario, Canada. Her given name was Mary Elizabeth. She grew to young womanhood and was educated in her native home and it was there that she was married, on the 29th day of June, 1875, to John D. MacMillan, who brought his bride directly to Neillsville where they resided for the balance of their lives.

The family home on South Hewett Street, a beautiful solid brick structure, built by Mr. and Mrs. MacMillan in 1902, is a monument to the sub-stantiability of these fine pioneer people. Mr. MacMillan was a lumberman during his early manhood. He also was associated, with other residents of this city, in the coal mining business in Iowa, later establishing himself in the milling business in Neillsville. He passed away Sept. 15, 1908.

She is survived by three daughters and a son: Miss Beatrice MacMillan, Neillsville; Catherine, Mrs. F. B. Wing, Abbotsford; Evelyn, Mrs. Frank Cutter, Lima, Ohio, and Donald MacMillan, Washington, D. C. She also leaves four grandchildren, Mary (Wing) Young, Bakersfield, Cal., and Ben J. Wing, Marshfield; Mary (Cutter) Koppitch, Toledo, Ohio, and four great-grandchildren, John and Elizabeth Young, Heidi Koppitch and John Wing.

Mrs. MacMillan was a lifelong member of the Presbyterian Church, a faithful worker in the church and Sunday school as long as her health and strength permitted activities aside from those in her home.

Beauty, refinement, gentleness and kindness are but a few of the lovely traits of character embodied in the life of Mrs. MacMillan. She was indeed a great workman, never related in prosperity, nor were class distinctions in any way evident in her life. She was a delightful neighbor and friend, without partiality, living each day according to the standards by which she had chosen, from her early youth, to guide her life.

Services will be held from the family home, but the date and hour are withheld pending word from relatives from distant cities. Interment will be made in the family lot in the Neillsville cemetery beside her husband.

Mrs. Mary MacMillan Rites

In attendance at the funeral of Mrs. Mary MacMillan last Friday afternoon were the following relatives and friends from distant cities: Rev. George Griffiths, Abbotsford; the daughters, Mrs. (Catherine) F. B. Wing, Abbotsford and Mrs. (Evelyn) F. C. Cutter, Lima, Ohio; and their husbands; a grandson, J. B. Wing, and wife, Marshfield; a niece, Mrs. E. E. Patterson, and her husband, Fifield, and a nephew, Alex Patterson, and wife, Fifield; Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Tufts and Mrs. W. W. McCulloch, Marshfield and Mr. and Mrs. Ovid Halmstead, Mrs. Paul Waech, Mrs. J. B. Johnston and Mrs. Peter Alexander, Abbotsford.

The pallbearers were: Judge O. W. Schoengarth, Oluf Olson, Claude Sturdevant, George Zimmerman, W. A. Campman and Herman North.

The Rev. George Griffiths, a friend of the MacMillan family, conducted the rites.
