Gierl, Laura Gertrude (19 Jan. 1886 – 10 Oct. 1944)

Funeral services for Mrs. Robert Gierl, who died at her home Tuesday, October 10, will be held Monday morning at 10:00 o’clock at St. Bernard’s Catholic church at Abbotsford. Mrs. Gierl, age 58, had been ill the past month and went to St. Joseph’s hospital at Marshfield on Oct. 8th for examination and treatment. She returned home October 8th and death came at 9:00 o’clock Tuesday night. Pall bearers were Joe Kunze, Frank Lucas, Leo Baur, John Kiefer, Anton Van Dreel, Fred Tolle. Those in charge of the flowers were Mary Dolan, Catheryn Dolan, Ann Nikolie, Ella Seidel, Marathon Janda.

Laura Gertrude Schneider was born on Jan. 19, 1886, in the town of Hull. After she finished school she spent a few years in Iowa City, Iowa. She was married to Robert Gierl at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Colby on Jan. 16, 1912. They lived in Colby for a year and then moved to Abbotsford where they lived for four years during which time Mr. Gierl worked for the railroad. Then they moved to their farm, three and one-half miles east of Abbotsford, where they lived together until Mr. Gierl’s death, Nov. 14, 1941. Mrs. Gierl continued to make her home there until her own death.

She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic church and St. Bernard’s Altar Society.

Surviving are two children; Morris and Mrs. Robert (Helen) Weideman, both of Abbotsford, and four grand children. There are two brothers, John Schneider of Colby and Anton Schneider of Spokane, Wash.; two sisters, Mrs. Herman Helmer of Iowa City, Iowa, and Mrs. Leo Bates of Stiens, N. Mex. One sister, Mrs. Al Schuman, of Abbotsford, preceded her in death.

Out of town people present for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Nick Gierl, Mr. and Mrs. Ernie Gierl, George Gierl, Louie Gierl, Killian Gierl and John Schneider of Colby, Mrs. Leo Bates of Stiens, N. Mex., Anton Schneider of Spokane, Wash., Mrs. Herman Helmer of Iowa City, Iowa, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Gierl, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Gierl, Mrs. Anna Schmidt, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Lehman, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Lehman, Mrs. John Berghhammer and Mrs. L. Miller, all of Athens.
