Gierl, Ernest P. (8 July 1895 – 21 Jan. 1946)

Ernest P. Gierl, a prominent farmer and fur dealer of this community, died at 3:00 o’clock Monday afternoon at his home in the town of Hull at the age of 50 years. He had been ill several years and suffered a stroke Sunday night. A rosary service was conducted at the Gierl home, where the body had been lying in state, Wednesday evening. A requiem high mass will be read this Thursday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic church at 9:30 o’clock, Rev. N. B. Beschta officiating, and internment will be made in the Colby cemetery.

Mr. Gierl was born in the town of Hull on July 8th, 1895, and lived on a farm since his marriage to Loretta Duellmann September 18th, 1928. He was a veteran of World War I and was a member of the American Legion, the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Holy Name Society.

Surviving are his wife and seven children, Peter, Mary Lou, Patricia, Barbara, Dorothy, Judith and Victoria, all at home. Two daughters, Catherine and Mary Ann, preceded him in death.

Also surviving are five brothers and four sisters – Louis, Killian and George Gierl of Colby, Joseph and Albert Gierl of Athens, Mrs. Katherine Seaberry of Grand Rapids, Mich., Mrs. Mary Dietrich of Milwaukee, Mrs. Ida Lukowicz of Colby and Mrs. Hugo (Anna) Dhein of Clintonville.

The deceased was a good Christian, an indulgent husband and father and of an industrial and congenial disposition. His many friends were sorry to hear of his departure.

Funeral services for Ernest P. Gierl were held at St. Mary’s Catholic church last Thursday morning, Rev. M. B. Beschta officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were John Frane, Jerry Firnstahl, Emanuel Firnstahl, Frederick Schwierske, Junior Tesmer, F. A. Weix; color bearers, C. R. Whitney, C. A. Nelsen, color guards, Benjamin Brill and Robert Unger; bugler, Marlene Neuman; firing squad, I. M. Firnstahl, commander, Norman Orth, Harold Kademan, Carl Sabler, Oscar Dittmeyer, Lyle Hafeman, Ernest Schulz; presentation of flag, John Gries. The flowers were in charge of Joan Gierl, Loretta Olson, Jane Lukowicz and Delores Beyerl.
