Hirsch, Everett C. (1886 – 19 July 1946)

Everett C. Hirsch, a graduate of Colby High School and city superintendent of schools at Wausau for the past 12 years, died at St. Mary’s hospital at Wausau Friday morning at 10:30 o’clock at the age of 60 years.

Widely known throughout Wisconsin as an educator, Mr. Hirsch was known as a “friend of the teacher.” He was a former president of the Northwest Wisconsin Educational association; former chairman of the Wisconsin Education association committee on locals; former president of the Rice Lake and Wausau Rotary clubs, and a former president of the Wausau Community Chest. He was also a member of the Masonic lodge.

Mr. Hirsch was a very fluent speaker and was much in demand as an after-dinner speaker.

He went to Wausau in 1934 to take over the office of superintendent left vacant by the resignation of the late S. B. Tobey. During the years since he introduced many new educational practices and helped materially to raise the standards of the school system.

Mr. Hirsch was born in the town of Scott, Sheboygan county, and spent his boyhood in Marathon county. He was graduated from the high school in Unity in 1904 and the Colby High School in 1905. He was graduated from the Oshkosh normal school in 1909 with a bachelor of philosophy degree. He later attended the University of Wisconsin, and where he received a master of philosophy degree.

After leaving Oshkosh normal he taught in Birnamwood for one year, followed by five years at Loyal. He was superintendent of schools in Park Falls for six years and at Rice Lake for 13 years before moving to Wausau on 1934.

Mr. Hirsch was married to Miss Emelyn Cook in Unity, June 15, 1912. She died exactly two years ago, July 19, 1944. Mr. Hirsch was married to Miss Florence Olmstead in Freemont, Mich., June 9, 1945.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Donald E. Hirsch, Washington, D.C., and Allen S. Hirsch, Pittsburgh, Pa., a brother, C. J. Hirsch, Abbotsford, and six grand-children.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the First Universal church at Wausau and the body was taken to the Colby cemetery for burial.
