Baer, Nick (24 July 1871 – 11 Aug. 1946)

Nick Baer of Colby died suddenly Sunday morning, a stroke being the cause of his sudden death. He and Mrs. Baer attended services at St. Mary’s church, and, on the way home, he told his wife that he would sit down and rest awhile when he arrived at the former Neumeister building. Mrs. Baer did not think there was anything serious the matter and continued on her way home. A few minutes later, Dr. A. L. Schemmer brought Mr. Baer home in a serious condition and he died an hour later. Funeral services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic church at Colby Friday morning at 9:00 o’clock, Rev. N. B. Beschta officiating, and internment will be made in the Catholic cemetery at Blenker. The body now is lying in state at the Baer home.

The deceased was born at Hilbert, Wis., on July 24, 1871, thus reaching the age of 75 years and 18 days. He was married to Margaret Smazel at St. John’s church at Marshfield on Sept. 3, 1895. Mr. Baer was a brakeman on the Athens branch of the Soo Line for two years and also operated two farms, at different times, near Milladore, before coming to Colby on January 3, 1912, to operate a shoe repair shop.

Mr. Baer was a member of the Colby Fire Department for 36 years and was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters.

Surviving are his widow, a grand son, Lloyd Jastrow, who made his home with them the past seven years; three brothers, William Baer of Los Angeles, Peter Baer of Marshfield and John Baer of San Fransisco, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Frank Henny of Fond du Lac.
