Reichert, Caroline (15 Feb. 1913 – 24 Sept. 1946)

Two fatal automobile accidents occurred Tuesday, when Mrs. Emma Glenzer, age 74, of Curtiss was killed in a collision four miles east of Abbotsford on Highway 29 and Miss Caroline Reichert, age 33, of Unity was killed when the driver of the car in which she was riding lost control of the car at the Poplar River bridge on Highway 29, just east of the Clark county asylum.

Mrs. Glenzer, at the time of the accident, Tuesday afternoon, was on her way to a hospital at Wausau to visit Mrs. Ronald Glenzer, and her new baby when Joe Schraufnagel, age 70 years, of Glidden drove out of a side road and collided with the Glenzer car, driven by Ronald Glenzer. Mr. Schraufnagel, who had been visiting his brothers and families in the town of Hull, was returning to Glidden. Mrs. Kibble, Mrs. Ronald Glenzer’s mother, was accompanying the Glenzers. The Glenzer car was severely damaged.

According to county traffic officers, Joseph Schraufnagel, 70, Glidden, driving north on a side road, was making a left turn onto highway 29 when Ronald Glenzer, son of the victim, approached the intersection from the west. Traffic officers said Glenzer was driving at a high rate of speed and sounded his horn as he approached, but apparently did not slacken his speed or apply his brakes.

The Schraufnagel car had come to an almost complete stop, police officers said, when the right rear fender of the Glenzer car hooked the right front headlight of the Schraufnagel machine.

After clipping off a mail box post, the Glenzer car rolled about 150 feet, ending up on its right side.

Mrs. Glenzer was killed outright, Glenzer escaped with bruises and Mrs. Chris Kibble, Colby, escaped with minor chest injuries.

A coroner’s jury viewed the body and the scene of the accident Wednesday morning. An inquest will be held at the court house in Wausau Friday morning.

Mrs. Glenzer was born in Sheboygan on March 8, 1872, and was married to Fred Glenzer on Nov. 1, 1894, at Green Grove. She lived on a farm two and one-half miles southwest of Curtiss in Green Grove since her marriage. Mr. Glenzer died in 1933. Surviving are five sons and one daughter – Fred, at home, Hubert of Green Grove, Harold of Colby, Walter and Roland, at home; Mrs. Rudolph (Dorothy) Heyer of Wausau. Also eight grand-children, one great grand child and two sisters – Mrs. Bertha Eschwig and Mrs. Huldah Saunders, both of Seattle, Wash.

Mrs. Glenzer was a faithful member of St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran church and ladies aid. She had lived in Green Grove 52 years and was one of the oldest residents of the town, was a good mother, friend and neighbor and will be missed by a large circle of acquaintances.

Funeral services for Mrs. Glenzer will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 P.M. at the Lulloff Funeral Home in Colby and at 2:30 at St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran church, Rev. M. C. Goetsch officiating, and internment will be made in the parish cemetery.

Miss Reichert, at the time of the accident Tuesday morning, was accompanying Morris Morgan of Unity, who was driving a Chevrolet, to Eau Claire on business. When they reached the Poplar River bridge, just east of the Clark county asylum, Morgan lost control of his car which hit the north side of the bridge, swerved and rolled over into the ditch, about 15 feet deep. Morgan suffered only slight bruises and the car was not badly damaged.

Miss Reichert was taken immediately to Owen for medical attention but the doctor there advised that she be taken to the hospital at Stanley at once but she died on the way. Funeral services will be held at the Lulloff Funeral Home Friday afternoon, Sept. 27, Father Paul Stimmler, M.S.C., officiating, and internment will be made in the Colby cemetery. Rev. Stimmler is substituting for Rev. Beschta who will be gone for a few days.
