Obit: Kuehnau, Maude (1871 – 1966)
Surnames: Kuehnau, Damon, Hagen Source: Marshfield News Herald (Marshfield, Wood County, Wis.) May 1966 Kuehnau, Maude (29 Jan. 1871 – 5 May 1966) SPENCER – Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Jasperson Funeral Home here for Mrs. Maude (Damon) Kuehnau, 95, Unity, who died Thursday at Bethel Convalescent Home, where she had resided since January, 1960. The Rev. R. James Hagen, Methodist pastor, will officiate and burial will be made in West Spencer cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning Sunday morning. Many who attended schools in Marathon County’s town of Brighton, or in Thorp or the village of Unity, will remember the former Miss Damon, whose teaching career in those communities spanned an era of 33 years. As Maude Damon she was born in Adams County, the child of parents who came to Wisconsin from Lubec, Maine. She was about 4 years of age when her father, a lumberman, moved to Spencer. She received her education in Spencer schools and the former Stevens Point Normal, now Wisconsin State University. After her marriage to John Kuehnau in Marshfield on Dec. 14, 1911, she made her home in Unity. Her husband, a Unity businessman, died in 1920. The couple had no children. Mrs. Kuehnau displayed keen interest in national politics and had voted for Republican candidates in every presidential election since the amendment of the Constitution in 1920, giving women the right of suffrage. In 1960, the first year as a resident at Bethel Home, she was the subject of a Marshfield News Herald feature story. A photograph accompanying the story showed her casting her vote for Richard Nixon as president. Mrs. Kuehnau’s only survivors are nephews. Three brothers and a sister preceded her in death.
