Salter, Theodore R. (1 Jan. 1902 – 27 Oct. 1954)

Theodore R. Salter of Marshfield, formerly of Unity, was instantly killed last Thursday night at 6:10 P.M. when his car rammed the rear of a stalled truck loaded with seven tons of limestone on Highway 97, a half mile south of the intersection with Highway 29 in Marathon county. The truck was driven by Albert Storm of Park Falls who escaped injury and his vehicle sustained only minor damage.

Storm had entered the highway from a private driveway on the west side of the road and turned south when motor trouble caused his truck to stall. The truck was halted in the west lane and was partly on the shoulder, police said. Salter, southbound from Wausau to Marshfield, crashed into the rear of the stalled vehicle.

Salter, who was alone, was extricated from his wrecked car and rushed by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital in Wausau, where he was declared dead on arrival. John Hildensperger, Marathon county coroner, said that death was due to multiple crushing injuries of the chest, that the fatality has been ruled accidental and no inquest will be held.

The fatality was Marathon county’s 29th traffic death this year.

Salter was born in Unity on January 1, 1902, and received his education there and at the University of Wisconsin. He married Lucille Lueloff, daughter of Mrs. Theo. Lueloff of Colby, at Colby on Oct. 12, 1929, and lived in Unity until 1950 when the family moved to Marshfield. While in Unity, he served as president of the village board and treasurer of the school board. For the past three years, he was employed as a salesman for the Clay Equipment Corporation of Cedar Fall, Iowa.

Surviving are his wife; three children, Mrs. Don (Maxine) Olson of Loyal and Betty Jane and Sally Ann Salter, students at the University of Wisconsin; a brother, Arthur, Marshfield; four sisters, Mrs. Marian Tschudy, principal of Lincoln School in Marshfield, Mrs. E. C. Vogt of St. Paul, Minn., Mrs. James L. Stump of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mrs. Harvey L. Eley of Los Angeles, Calif., and one grandson.
