Schommer, Bernard M. (21 Apr. 1879 – 20 Jan. 1955)

Bernard M. Schommer died last Thursday at 7:10 P.M. at the Marshfield hospital where he had been a patient since last week Wednesday after suffering a stroke at his home in the town of Hull. He was 75 years old. A rosary was said at the Lulloff Funeral Home Sunday night by the Catholic Order of Foresters, of which he was a member, and funeral services were held Monday morning at St. Mary’s Catholic church, Rev. Vincent Schwartz officiating, and internment was made in the Colby cemetery. Pall bearers were William Sedlack, Wilbur Becker, Ervin Meyer, Jim Foster, Marcellus Foster and Dale Reis. Mr. Schommer had been ill with a heart ailment for two years.

Mr. Schommer was born on April 21, 1879, in Michigan. In 1914, he came to Colby and settled on a farm in the town of Hull where he had lived since. His first marriage was to Catherine Guelff in September, 1905. Three children were born to them. She died on February 5th, 1920. On November 22nd, 1922, he married Bertha Simion of Pittsburg, Kansas.

He was president of the Hull Town Mutual Insurance Company, a director of the Harmony Co-operative Produce Company for many years and clerk of the town of Hull for 33 years. He resigned as clerk of the town of Hull two years ago.

Surviving are his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Harry (Valerian) Zilisch of Denmark; two sons, Norbert Schommer of St. Charles, Minn., and Harold Schommer of Colby; three brothers, Lambert Schommer of Marshfield, Casper Schommer of Ventura, Calif., and Ray Schommer of Kaukauna; three sisters, Mrs. Carl Johnson of Colby, Mrs. Inar Olson of Abbotsford and Mrs. Bert DeBruin of Kaukauna; three grand children and one great grand child. A brother, John Schommer, and a sister, Mrs. Peter Van Rooy, preceded him in death.

Mr. Schommer was well known as a man who always, under all circumstances, walked in the well beaten path of righteousness, and, being of an agreeable and sensible disposition, had many friends who will miss him. This can be testified to by the various offices he held for many years.

Out of town people here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Harry Zilisch and son, Richard, and Marlene Feit of Denmark, Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Schommer of St. Charles, Minn., Mrs. Bert DeBruin, Carl DeBruin and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Schommer of Kaukauna, Mr. and Mrs. Lambert Schommer and family and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Schommer of Marshfield, Mr. and Mrs. Einar Olson of Abbotsford, Ivan Olson of Bradley, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hiebsch of Curtiss and Henry and John Guelff of Appleton.
