Irish, Emily (11 AUG 1868 – 20 NOV 1942)

Emily Jones was born in Oarken Gates, Shropshire, England, on Aug. 11, 1868. She died on Nov. 20, 1942, at Cadott, Wis.

She was united in marriage to James Irish on Sept. 12, 1891. Of this union was born two children, a son and daughter, Charles Haddon and Florence May. She came from England to the united States in the year 1907. Her husband having received an appointment in the West Wis. Conference as a pastor, the first charge being Hazel Green, Grant County. In the intervening years she has served with her husband a number of charges, among them the principal ones being Hazel Green – that they have often spoken of as being their American Home, Poynette, Bloomington, Grantsburg, Chetek, Lindsey and Thorp. At Thorp (Clark Co., Wis.) she spent 10 very happy years and last year celebrated her 50th wedding anniversary there.

The work of removal from Thorp to Cadott proved too much for her.

She suffered a heart attack and was sick for four months before she answered the call to another and better world.

She proved to be one of the best wives and mothers God ever gave to a man and his children. Her husband has declared that she was one of the most unselfish women he has ever known, always willing to sacrifice in the interest of others, especially her own family. She toiled for years in the Sunday School and Ladies Aid Society. It may be said of her what Jesus said of Mary, “She hath done what she could.”

She is survived by her husband, Rev. James Irish, son Charles of Pontiac, Mich., and daughter, Mrs. H.A. Bilben of White Bear Lake, St. Paul, Minn.

Her work is done, her task finished, and God has wiped away all tears from her eyes.

“Sleep on beloved, sleep and take thy rest

We love the well, but Jesus loves the best,

We will meet thee in the morning.”

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church at 2:30 p.m. Monday with a short service at the Thorp Funeral Home where the body lay in state.

Rev. Willett of Chippewa Falls preached the funeral sermon. Other clergy present were: Rev. E. Clark of Eau Claire, Rev. Gaylord, Stanley, Rev. Ferguson of Lindsey, Rev. Lee, local M.E. Pastor and Rev. I. Sainty of Cameron.

Interment was made in the East Thorp Cemetery. Pallbearers were: Chas. Ramberg, Henry Jalling, Edward Asselin, Isaac Sisco, Walter Bohn and Floyd Cook.
