Adams, Charles (1863 – 1 Nov. 1950)

Charles Adams, age 87, a bachelor, who had been making his home at the Mueller Brothers café in Colby, was instantly killed Wednesday night, shortly before 8:00 o’clock, at the post office corner when struck by a car driven by Peter Miller, age 45, of West Allis who was on his way to Medford. Miller was alone in his car. Adams was on his way to the bowling alley at the time, and when he crossed Highway 13, he was struck by the left front side of the Miller car and carried 48 feet before the car stopped. The impact broke the left headlight of the car and put a big dent in the hood.

The accident was investigated by Bob Hartkopf, Marathon county traffic officer, and John Hildensperger, Marathon county coroner. Miller was taken to Wausu for examination by the officers. Miller seemed unsteady on his feet, as if he had been drinking, although his breath did not smell of liquor. Officers believe this unsteadiness may have been caused by the shock of the accident or some illness.

An inquest will be held at Wausau Nov. 8. A jury will be impaneled in Colby this Thursday afternoon at 1:30 P.M.

Walter Mueller notified Charles’ brother, Bill, at Sheboygan who arrived here this morning. Funeral arrangements have not been made as yet.
