Creed, William Noyes (28 July 1870 – 11 Jan. 1958)

Funeral services were held in Colby Tuesday afternoon for William Noyes Creed, 87, a prominent Unity resident, who died of old age complications Saturday at the Havenet Nursing Home at Owen, where he had been a patient a short time.

A member of the first white family of Unity, Mr. Creed was elected to the Clark County Board of Supervisors in 1904 as the first board member from Unity, and served for 48 consecutive years ending in April 1953.

He served as vice chairman of the Clark County Board for many years and also was a member of the Clark County Fair Association, where he held offices as president and vice president during his 27 years as a member of the organization. He also held many public offices in Unity.

It was through his efforts that Clark County was set up as a soil conservation district and he headed the county’s Soil Conservation and Agriculture Committee for many years and was honored for his many accomplishments in 1950 at a countywide “field day” at Owen.

Born in Nelsonville, in Portage County, July 28, 1870, Mr. Creed moved to Unity with his parents at the age of two years. His mother was the first white woman in this locality.

He received his elementary and high school education in Unity. He was engaged in the mercantile business here from 1909 to 1930 and later worked as a salesman for Felker Bros. Mfg. Co., of Marshfield.

He was affiliated with the Odd Fellows Lodge of Unity and the Masonic Lodge of Colby.

He married Lulu Pettit, who died in October, 1952, on November 4, 1904 at Chippewa Falls.

Survivors are one son, Nyole E. Creed, Unity; who is the village postmaster; and five daughters, Mrs. M. (Evotta) Mar??ers, Long Beach, Calif.; Mrs. George (?ela) Korntved, Clinton, Iowa; Mrs. George (Virginia) Stauner, Wausau; Mrs. Charles (Ramona) Derby, Marshfield, and Mrs. Charles (Neefa) Kubat, Wisconsin Rapids.

Other survivors are 11 grandchildren and two brothers, Charles Creed of Green Bay and Homer Creed of King, Wisconsin.

The Rev. Roy Gustafson, of Ogema conducted final rites at the Lulloff Funeral Home at Colby at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Internment followed in the Colby cemetery.

The Rev. Roy Gustafson of Ogema conducted final rites at the Lulloff Funeral Home at Colby, at 2 P.M. January 14, for William N. Creed, 87, who passed away January 11.

Pallbearers were Theodore Domer, Forrest Johnson, Floyd Binning, Edward Fei, George Miller and William Schultz.

People from away who came for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George Korntved, Clinton, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Derby and sons, Paul and Charles of Marshfield; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kubat and family of Wisconsin Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. George Stauner and family, Wausau; Mr. and Mrs. William A. Creed of Woodruff, Mrs. Edward Zack, Wisconsin Rapids; Mr. and Mrs. Louis Soles, Marshfield; Charles Creed, Green Bay and Homer Creed of King.

Also present were a host of friends from Neillsville, Unity, Colby, Thorp, Owen, Greenwood and other towns.
