Hoops, August William (30 Dec. 1881 - 27 Apr. 1935)

Spencer - Funeral services will be conducted here on Tuesday afternoon for August William Hoops, prominent Spencer business man who died at St. Joseph's hospital, Marshfield, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Mr. Hoops suffered a paralytic stroke two years ago and had undergone treatment at Marshfield and Madison. His condition had been much improved when he suffered a second stroke on March 17. A complication of additional ailments contributed to the seriousness of his condition and brought about his death.

Brief rites will be conducted at the Hoops home here at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday and will be followed by services at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church at 2 p.m. The Rev. A. C. Stapel will officiate, and burial will take place in the Spencer cemetery.

Born at Wayside, Brown county, on Dec. 30, 1881, Mr. Hoops attended school and was confirmed there. He came to Spencer with his parents in May, 1899, and on July 1, 1902, was married to Elizabeth Griepentrog.

The first few years of their married life were spent at Unity. Later they returned to Spencer, where Mr. Hoops operated a cheese factory. He also operated the Brighton cheese factory and for a time operated the factory two miles north of Spencer now operated by his son-in-law, Ed Huber.

In 1917, he purchased a hardware store in Spencer but after 13 years in the hardware business returned to cheesemaking, operating factories at Thorp and Spencer. Poor health forced him to give up this occupation two years ago.

Mr. Hoops was prominent in civic and church affairs, served for a number of years as a village trustee, and was a trustee of Trinity Evangelical church and a member of its choir. He is survived by his wife and five children, Mrs. Ed Huber and Mrs. Laura Brockopp, Spencer; Raymond, Barron; Arthur, Greenwood; and Wilbur, at home; by his father, John Hoops; three grandchildren; and the following brothers and sisters, Henry, Moon; Herbert, Fond du Lac; Erwin and Martin, Spencer; Mrs. Albert Vanderhoof, Mrs. William Plath, and Mrs. Frank Martin, Spencer; Mrs. Harry Graham, Chili; Mrs. Herman Molle, Unity; and many other relatives.
