The Circuit court of Clark county has written “finis” to the marriage of Arthur and Claire Eibergen of Granton, parties to an unsolved mystery. The divorce was granted to Mr. Eibergen, without an appearance in court of Mrs. Eibergen, who is now in Massachusetts with one of her daughters. By the decree Arthur Eibergen is given the bank account of $735.93; also insurance policies of $2,500.

The Eibergens were married August 10, 1913, and have three children, all of them over 21 years of age. The action for the divorce was started by Mrs. Eibergen; hence technically he appears as defendant, though the decree finally went to him.

The court included the following in the findings of fact: “That commencing about 10 years ago the plaintiff started a course of cruel and inhuman treatment of said defendant, practiced on said defendant by continually nagging at and abusing the defendant, calling him vile and obscene names; that she persistently has accused defendant of associating with other women, even though he has been a faithful and obedient husband to said plaintiff; that she persistently has accused him of drinking to excess, whereas defendant has not ever drunk to excess or frequented taverns; that the said plaintiff has attempted through said marriage to alienate the affection of defendant’s children, and has persistently refused to live with the defendant in the usual marital relationship, telling him that she wanted nothing to do with him whatever; that on the 11th day of September, 1944, the defendant was shot through the chest with a small caliber rifle by persons unknown, and that the plaintiff attempted to have defendant prosecuted for attempted suicide, and that as a result of said conduct on the part of the plaintiff, defendant has suffered an actual impairment of health, which renders it unsafe for him to further live with said plaintiff.

The granting of the divorce evidently closes the shooting incident, which occasioned an extensive investigation, in which state experts participated. The manner of the shooting has never been finally and completely explained.
