Thursday, 13 July 1944 ---Shafer, Laura Emelia (19 Dec. 1853 – 5 July 1944) Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Shafer were held on Sunday afternoon, July 9 at 1:30 at her home and at 2 o’clock at the Methodist Church in Neillsville, and were conducted by the Rev. Floyd A. Fahlgren, pastor of the church. Burial took place in the Neillsville Cemetery. Mrs. Shafer died Wednesday evening, July 5, at her home on North Grand avenue, after an illness of several weeks. The deceased, whose maiden name was Laura Emelia Potter, was born December 19, 1853, in Washington County, Wis. There she grew to womanhood and in February, 1886, she was married to Norman Shafer at West Bend, Wis. They resided on a farm in Sheboygan County for one year, and then moved to Clark County, settling in the town of York, where they resided until 1914. Then they moved to Neillsville, where she has since resided. Her husband died in 1925. Mrs. Shafer was one of the pioneers, and had reached the advanced aged of 90 years. She led and active life until recently, and was a quite disposition. She held the highest respect of those who knew her. She was a member of the Methodist church, and active worker in her earlier years. Surviving are her daughter, Olive Shafer, who resides at home, a sister, Mrs. Laverne Board, and a brother, Edward Potter, both of Mason City, Iowa. Five brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. Wayne Potter of Neillsville is her nephew. Pallbearers were John Krejci, Edward Gault, Walter Rowe, Roy Lawrence, Wellen Hartson and Berton Wells. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Jaster Funeral Home.
