News: Colby (May 27, 1885)
Surnames: Buss, Freeman, Kuentz ----Source: Colby Phonograph (Colby, Clark County, Wis.) Wednesday, May 27, 2008 Chas. Buss, a Swede, living at Abbotsford, went hunting last Sunday, and became a good subject for a Sunday School lecturer to moralize over. His cartridges were a little to large for his gun, a Winchester. While trying to force one of them into the chamber, it exploded, and the gun was in such a position that, while the ball went out the front end, a portion of the shell and nearly all the powder entered the fleshy part of the thigh, making a hole closely resembling a two inch auger hole, deep enough to expose the femoral artery, along side of which the piece of shell was found. If the artery had been cut, Charles would now be under the daisies, but as good fortune would have it, the artery was not cut and he is as good as forty dead men, yet. Dr. Freeman dressed the wound and made the young man as comfortable as possible. Valuable Mare Lost White Bro’s. & Co. lost a valuable mare, Monday morning by a rather curious accident. While being driven across the railroad track, on Spence street, she caught the tow caulk of the shoe of the left front foot, on the head of a spike in such a manner as to pitch her forward on her right shoulder, breaking her leg in two places between the shoulder and knee. Adam Kuentz was pressed into service to shoot the mare which he did in good shape. The mare was valued at $250. |
