Bio: Hollister, O.A.J. - Blew up in a Well 2-1880
Source: The Clark Republican and Press Date: 2-6-1880 Blew up in a Well On Wednesday afternoon of this week, O. A. J. Hollister met with an accident in a well that he was digging on Blakeslee’s farm, west of this place, which providentially proved less than fatal. He was tamping in a charge of powder to blast the rook in the bottom of the well, then 60 feet deep, when a premature discharge took place. He was thrown upwards several feet and against the side of the well. Upon gathering himself up he found himself able to climb out of the well alone, and on examination of his injuries found his nose and forehead lacerated some, his face and body somewhat powder burned, and his legs badly bruised, but no bones broken or very serious injury of any kind. As the blast was a powerful one, and he was sitting squarely on the rock that contained it, it is hard to see how he escaped death. |
