Veteran of Chateau Thierry is Here

Glen Blakely, purchasing agent for the Oelhafen Lumber Co., of Tomahawk, was in the city last Friday, looking after business and greeting old friends.

Mr. Blakely is an overseas veteran and carries the scars of battle in the shape of a crippled hand which he received at Chateau Thierry on Aug. 5th, 1918, being a member of an infantry company of the 4th U.S. Division which took part in the great battle. Glen enlisted in the service in Montana shortly after America entered the war and after a few months training in one of the southern camps left for a French port from Halifax, N.S., on the British transport, “Moldavia,” the great majority of the troops on board being Canadians. The ship was torpedoed and sunk off the coast of England resulting in a loss of more than fifty lives, but Glen managed to get to shore in a life-boat.

The wound he received at Chateau Thierry was made by a piece of shrapnel which struck him in the back of his hand about half way between the knuckles and the wrist, tearing a hole as large as a fifty-cent piece. He was placed in one of the hospitals in France, where he remained until the following February when he was sent back to the United States.

Mr. Blakely is well remembered here having been employed as bookkeeper at the Colby cheese-box factory about eight years ago.
