Obit: Baker, Josiah (1833-1934)
CIVILWAR VETERAN DIES THURSDAY Josiah Baker, 101 year old Civil War veteran, died at the home of his son, Seth, at Abbotsford, last Thursday night. Funeral services for the aged pioneer, who attributed his long life to hard work and clean habits, were held at Bethel Monday afternoon. Born in Chautauqua County, New York, on August 11, 1833, while the Union consisted of only 24 states, Andrew Jackson was president. Mr. Baker spent his boyhood at Counties Port, Pa., and came to Wisconsin while still a young man. He fought under the banner of Company, C ,37th Wisconsin Infantry, during the Civil War, and was honorably discharged three months after the close of the conflict. He was married to Miss Elizabeth Bliss of New York, and they came together to Loyal after the war, settling on a farm and living there until 1908, when they moved to Arpin. Mrs. Baker passed away in 1911 and in 1918, Mr. Baker went to live with his son, Seth at Abbotsford. Surviving him are ten children, one of them adopted, 97, grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. The children are Elmer Baker, Arpin; Mrs. Byron Pedwick, Dancy; Mrs. Elizabeth Lincoln, Monrovia,Calif.; Charles Baker, Puyallup, Wash.; Newell Baker, Menasha; Alvin Baker, Mosinee; Arthur Baker, Marinesco, Mich.; William Baker, Melrose; Seth Baker, Abbotsford; and Mrs. Arthur Yeske, Tavera. Deceased will be remembered by many of our readers as he resided with his son, Seth, and family on what is known as the Geo. Rude" farm, northeast of Greenwood, for several years.
