News: The Clark Republican and Press 9-6-1884
Source: The Clark Republican and Press Date: 9-6-1884 J. W. Hommel has returned from Peoria, Ill., where he was attending the Grand Lodge of Select Knights A. O. U. W. Peter Gullingsrud has traded his farm in Pine Valley for a hotel in Duluth, Minn. His family left for that city on Monday. RELEASED THEMSELVES: At about 5 p.m. on Tuesday while W. F. Woodward, janitor of our county jail, was placing the prisoners in their cells preparatory to giving them their supper, and supposing that they were all in their cells, was about to lock the doors when Albert Martin, imprisoned for murder, struck him on the back of the head with his fist and turning around hit him on the forehead, and clutching him threw him down and told him if he made any alarm he would kill him, and at the same time told Huge Perkins, also imprisoned on the charge of murder, to let a horse thief by the name of George Morrison out of his cell, who came out and threw a blanket over Woodward’s head. They then took the prison keys from him and rolling him into a cell locked the doors. They then unlocked the door leading into the sheriffs residence and passed through the kitchen, armed with the legs of a chair that they had broken up for clubs, and frightening the women, made their escape down an alley to O’Neill creek. A prisoner ran out, the doors being unlocked, and gave the alarm, and then returned and unlocked the cell door and released Mr. Woodward who went to the court house and there gave the alarm. There being many in the city attending the election, in a short time there were a hundred men at the jail, and many started in pursuit but the prisoners made good their escape, as it soon became dark, and at this writing have not been captured. |
